Showing Clan Chat to the Public

How do you feel about your clan chat being shown to the public? are screenshots ok? what about livestreams?

When you write in a clan chat, do you expect that only clan members will see it? When people take screenshots or videos do you expect them to hide it?

If it is shown, is it a violation of privacy?. In my opinion it would depend on the subject matter, the clan recruitment policy and the amount of chat shown.

If the chat was talking about personal circumstances or specifics then I agree, that is certainly not public material, but why would you be sharing that in clan chat anyway? If the person in the chat was talking about exploits, or how to cheat the game, then yes, you wouldn't want that to be seen by others but then do I really want to shelter those people?

If the clan has an open recruitment policy, it is usually large and anyone can join. There is no real expectation of privacy. If the clan was closed with only a few people in it, then I would see there being a large issue with sharing chat.

The duration of sharing is also a factor, screenshots can be edited to take out any information needed and short videos cover a shorter conversation window. Livestreams which are archived and go on for a while expose a much larger portion of a clans chat.

I hadn't really thought about hiding anything when sharing screenshots or videos. However after thinking about these points, I have decided that in any future sharing from me I will cover the chat portions.

IMO: game clan chat should stay w clan. several topics are covered in this chat that should not be public knowledge.

I do not find it a violation of privacy at all to stream, create videos or use screenshots unedited - not even for smaller (closed) clans / guilds. The only (partial) exception would be if it was a specified criteria upon joining, but even then one should be very careful with what information is shared. As it becomes more and more commonplace for game developers to monitor every aspect of their games (especially MMOs), one cannot ever be certain of who ultimately ends up reading the chat. Therefore sensitive information of any kind should never be shared through in-game chat to begin with. Anyone who needs to share such information and require absolute control of who reads what, should ultimately use other means of communication.
